Before Crohn’s, I thought I’d have to teach my kids empathy. Turns out? My illness has done that for me.
Having a sick mom means my kids have grown up seeing what it means to care for others. They’ve learned to be gentle, to ask, “Mommy, do you need anything?”, and to understand that some days, people just need kindness.
Here’s what I’ve seen in them:
💜 They notice when someone is struggling. If they see a friend sad or hurt, they check in. They ask if they’re okay. They care.
💜 They offer comfort. Whether it’s bringing me a stuffed animal when I’m resting or patting my hand when I don’t feel well—they understand the power of small gestures.
💜 They’ve learned that strength doesn’t always look the same. Some days, strength is running around and playing. Other days, it’s simply getting through the day. And that’s okay.
My illness is hard, but if it has taught my kids to be more compassionate, then at least something good has come from it.
Stay Strong!
