No Dessert? Are you CRAZY?

I know what you are thinking. Crohns and desserts just don’t mix. But can you imagine going the rest of your life without having one of those decadent little treats? Well, I can’t.

Many of us with Crohns, Diabetes and other diseases were taught to avoid concentrated sweets (simple sugars), because they were thought to overload the blood with glucose much faster than starches (complex carbs). But over the years things have changed. Studies show that there is no need to avoid sugar totally unless you’re on some plan that requests you do like OA or FA. Many research studies show that foods containing sugar can be part of a healthy diet, even with people with such diseases.

Baked potatoes and pasta are just as likely to raise blood sugar levels and cookies and sweets, I’m not saying to indulge eating them every day; we are talking in major moderation.

With my Crohns disease, I’ve found that the best type of diet for me is a Ketogenic diet, meaning I limit my carbs to very minimal amounts. My intestines have a really hard time digesting carbs, leaving me to only feel cramping and experiencing major bloating.

What’s the best way to integrate snacks?
Even if you have Crohns, you can have your cake and eat it too. The key is to integrate your little snack into an overall healthy diet or meal plan. What you eat and what you do is at the heart of any treatment plan. If you are exercising, which is a must for everyone, eating the right foods will help you keep your blood sugar in check and triglycerides at a steady level. Which is the key to keeping problems under control for those with diabetes.

For those of us who just can’t live without a lil some-thin some-thin from now and then, I have added a few decadent recipes to satisfy your sweet tooth without the associated guilt. Check out next week’s posts for the recipes!
